For Aboriginal people, it is important that mental health is approached within a holistic wellness context. Holistic wellness in Aboriginal culture takes into account emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health, and healing occurs by treating the whole person. These four factors cannot be separated. Within an Aboriginal perspective, health is viewed inclusive of the health and well-being of the individual, family and the community.
In keeping with these ideas and beliefs, the Alberta Mental Health Board (AMHB) worked with provincial ministries, health regions, Health Canada, Aboriginal communities and other service providers to develop
Aboriginal Mental Health: A Framework for Alberta
The Framework embraces a holistic approach to service development and delivery. It also supports the Government of Alberta’s Aboriginal Policy Framework, which requires ministries to demonstrate their ability to strengthen relationships and address issues relating to Aboriginal peoples in Alberta.
Aboriginal Mental Health: A Framework for Alberta provides five Strategic Directions for Action which serves as a foundation for joint action planning in the development and implementation of resources, supports and services to advance Aboriginal mental health. The Strategic Directions include Service Development, Human Resources, Research and Evaluation, Equitable Funding, and Data Collection and Information.
