In May 2006 the Alberta Mental Health Board (AMHB) launched Grip – a new magazine for youth, written by Alberta’s youth, ages 13-18. It was recently recognized for its excellence in health care communications by taking home first place in external publications, an award presented by the Health Care Public Relations Association of Canada.
What’s unique about Grip magazine is that it tackles the issues that youth care about – and in an open and honest manner. Youth are also invited to participate in the Grip Youth Advisory Council. The Council provides advice to Grip´s editors about the direction and content of the magazine and website, and helps to identify the issues that are facing today’s youth. This is a unique opportunity for them to meet and interact with other youth from across Alberta and get a behind the scenes look at the publishing world.
The Grip website complements the magazine and provides additional information and resources. There is also an online forum where youth can interact and support one another. The forum is moderated to provide safety and security.
