Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by periods of elevation in mood and depressive episodes. People with this disorder have extreme mood swings. They experience periods of mania (extreme elevations in mood) to periods of depression. Often they will experience periods of ‘normal’ moods in between the two extremes. This mental disorder is often referred to as manic depression.
